Digitimes.com is reporting that Taiwanese R&D organisation, Opto-Electronics & Systems Laboratories, has demonstrated an alternative to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, called HD-DVD-1.

The clue is in the name - HD-DVD-1 is more closely related to HD-DVD than Blu-Ray, with a 17GB capacity. However, there is another format (tentatively called HD-DVD-2) which has similarities to Blu-Ray.

The demonstration took place at a December 7th conference, attended by, amongst others Lite-On and BenQ.

Although OES predicted that HD-DVD-1 drives would be on sale by the end of 2005, it seems likely that this format will drop beneath the radar of the big studios, currently locked in battle as they announce backing for either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. As reported on dvdrecorderworld.com this week, HD-DVD now has support from 45% of the market, but Blu-Ray recently hit back as it announced backing from Disney.
