TiVo launched their new TiVoToGo service today which will allow subscribers to transfer recordings to other devices, such as PCs.

Transfer takes place over a home network and requires the installation of the TiVoToGo software on the user's PC. So far the software only works on Windows XP or 2000, but a Mac OS version is planned. The ability to burn DVDs is also on the cards for future releases.

TiVo are keen to stress that this is for personal use only. Recordings will be tagged with special codes meaning they can only be played back on registered devices. Sharing files would result in a TiVo account being suspended. Programming that is protected with Macrovision copy protection including, PPV, VOD and commercial DVDs, will not be transferable.

"We're all about delivering lifestyle benefits to our subscribers. Consumers don't want to be tied to their living room to watch their favorite entertainment. Other generic DVRs confine your entertainment experience to the living room, but with TiVoToGo, subscribers can take their favorite shows with them to enjoy on business trips or family vacations," said Matt Wisk, chief marketing officer, TiVo.

This service is a free upgrade for all standalone Series2 TiVo DVRs. It will not work in DirecTV-TiVo boxes.
