JVC has expanded its DVD recorder line-up in the UK with the DR-MX1, a triple combo unit that combines a 160GB Hard Disk Drive — boasting up to 300 hours of recording capacity — with a multi-format DVD recorder offering a maximum of 8 hours’ recording capability on single-sided discs, and a VHS Hi-Fi video recorder with twin TV tuner.

The 3-in-1 recorder permits “6-way” dubbing without connecting to external devices — between HDD-DVD, DVD-VHS, and HDD-VHS. Additionally, the “Twin Tuner” lets you record two different programmes simultaneously on HDD (or DVD) and VHS for further convenience. And the i.LINK terminal allows you to edit video content on connected digital video camera.

The unit also incorporates JVC advanced technologies for recording and playback of high-quality images, and delivers high-resolution PAL-progressive (625p) pictures.

The DR-MX1 features a range of compatible formats, and permits recording and playback in DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD-R in addition to HDD and VHS. Playable formats also include DVD-Video, WMA, MP3, JPEG, and CDs.

The unit can handle HDD-to-DVD dubbing at a maximum speed of 32 times the normal rate with DVD-R 4x discs — dub a 1-hour programme to DVD in just under 2 minutes. If picture quality is your priority, the “Bit-Rate Optimiser” ensures the highest possible picture quality in HDD-to-DVD dubbing.

JVC-Exclusive Technologies for Recording and Playback of High-Quality Pictures

With the triple combo recorder, JVC's extensive expertise in the area of video technologies deliver high-quality pictures. Super MPEG Encode Pre- and Post-Processors improves picture quality both in recording and playback. This results in the highest-possible resolution with minimal MPEG compression noise, a unique JVC benefit most apparent with long-time recordings at reduced bit rates.

The unit is equipped with technologies for presenting solid, natural, high-resolution pictures in progressive format. Motion Active Progressive Scan Output intelligently generates a progressive scan signal from interlaced scan sources, such as TV programmes recorded on DVD and even VHS tapes. For film sources, JVC's exclusive Digital Direct Progressive Scan technology enables the units to deliver progressive pictures without interlacing the original pictures.

Solid Recording, Editing, and Dubbing Capability

The DR-MX1 incorporates an array of advanced features for recording, editing, and dubbing.

For HDD-to-DVD dubbing, the JVC-developed “Bit-Rate Optimiser” ensures the highest possible picture quality by optimising the bit rate allocation — higher for complex scenes with lots of movement or fast motions, and lower for simple scenes – while fitting the programme onto 4.7GB of disc space.

Additionally, JVC’s advanced technologies allow editing on HDD and dubbing to DVD without modifying the construction of MPEG signals. This results in a reduction in loss of dubbing, but also freeze free editing. You can edit HDD recorded pictures exactly the way you want, with no scene over or under-cutting, and when dubbed to DVD, the edited parts won’t freeze in mid-play which is usually an unpleasant but typical side effect of editing with a conventional recorder.

The unit also improves the quality of pictures from VHS when dubbing to HDD or DVD — the Time Base Corrector effectively reduces the jitter typically contained in images from old videotapes with lots of wear and tear.

“Auto Thumbnail Creation Dubbing” is another innovative function that takes advantage of recorder combinations. In VHS-to-HDD/DVD dubbing, the unit detects the tape-encoded signals that indicate programme changes and automatically creates thumbnails of dubbed programmes for easy access.

The DR-MX1 also features “Auto Blank-Cut Dubbing”. When dubbing from VHS to HDD or DVD, the unit automatically skips small blank spaces between programmes.

The HDD comes with a wide range of editing functionality including “Playlist-Based Editing” — a convenient, advanced feature also available with DVD-RAM and DVD-RW (VR mode). The unit’s i.LINK terminal permits DV input, and when you save digital video camcorder footage in HDD via the interface, you can easily edit scenes before burning to DVD.

The unit of course permits direct recording on DVD, and its Linear PCM recording capability delivers high-quality audio.

Advanced User-Friendly Features

The DR-MX1 also showcases a number of advanced user-friendly functions. One key feature is JVC's “Temporary Loop Recording” — turn on the unit, and it automatically starts temporary HDD recording of TV programmes. This lets you “go back” to the beginning of a currently aired programme to record, and you can even pause and resume viewing it.

The triple combo recorder provides easy access to recorded programmes. “Library Database DVD Navigation” permits the unit to memorise data from up to 2,000 individual programmes — the recorder can actually tell you which disc to load to view a particular show. After you load a disc or display the list of HDD-recorded programmes, “Animated Thumbnail” makes it easier to find the recorded programme you want. Simply select the thumbnail of a recorded title and it begins to move — with sound.

The DVD recorder portion delivers 8-hour recording, which means up to 16-hour content can be recorded on a dual sided disc.

A Single Unit for Multiple Entertainment Options

The DR-MX1 thus provides a wider array of home entertainment options than ever, letting you enjoy audio-visual content from multiple sources and edit your favourite video content just the way you want. And topping it all off is an elegant, sophisticated design that perfectly matches the unit’s high performance with its distinctive blue-light illumination and half-mirror front panel smartly covering the disc tray and tape deck. This combination of style and advanced technologies ensures a true upgrade to your home entertainment experience.
