Units feature advanced recording technologies for high-quality pictures and consumer-friendly usability.

The DR-MH20 and DR-MH20 permit recording and playback in DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD-R formats, and playback of DVD-Video, WMA, MP3, JPEG, and CD formats as well as being able to store considerably large amounts of video content on the built-in HDD -- for playback or for copying to DVD

JVC's extensive expertise in the area of video technologies is optimally applied to deliver high-quality pictures. A JVC-exclusive technology tandem -- Super MPEG Encode Pre- and Post- Processors -- improve picture quality both in recording and playback. This results in the highest-possible resolution with minimal MPEG compression noise, even when pictures are recorded in long-time modes at reduced bit rates.

The two units present solid, natural, high-resolution pictures in high-resolution PAL progressive format (625P). Motion Active Progressive Scan Output intelligently generates a progressive scan signal from interlaced scan sources, such as TV programmes recorded on DVD. For movie sources, JVC's exclusive Digital Direct Progressive Scan technology enables the units to deliver PAL progressive pictures without interlacing the original pictures.

User-Friendly Features

The new DVD recorders showcase a number of advanced user-friendly functions. One key feature is easy access to recorded programmes. The JVC recorders can memorise data from up to 2,000 programmes -- the recorders can actually tell you which disc to load when you are looking for particular show. After you load a disc or display the list of HDD-recorded programmes, ‘animated thumbnails’ further ensure easy access. Once you’ve chosen a thumbnail of a recorded title, it begins to move with sound, making selection even easier.

Simultaneous recording and playback of TV programmes, available with DVD-RAM, offers functionality similar to that of a hard disk drive. Additionally, the i.LINK input terminal allows for dubbing and editing of MiniDV video camera content and the high-resolution Graphical User Interface (GUI), with easy-to-follow icons and legible letters which enhances ease of use.

Exclusive Benefits of the DVD recorder + HDD Combination

The DR-MH30 and DR-MH20 are HDD + DVD recorder combos incorporating JVC state-of-the-art technologies. The two units feature built-in HDDs boasting enormous storage capacity – a maximum 272 hours of recording is possible with the DR-MH30, which comes with a 160GB HD, while up to 136 hours can be recorded using the DR-MH20 (80GB). Teaming together HDD and DVD recorder, more than doubles the benefits of each feature on their own.

The key to highly improved picture quality when dubbing from HDD to DVD is 'Intelligent Dual-Pass Encode Dubbing'. This advanced JVC-developed technology analyses the entire video content while recording it, in the first pass, to HDD, and then dubs the content to DVD on the second pass by flexibly adjusting the bit rate, according to the picture complexity of each scene. This ensures clear pictures with the highest-possible resolution and minimum MPEG noise -- even in complex scenes with many moving objects.

If speed is what you need, JVC HDD-to-DVD 'High-Speed Dubbing' gets the job done fast, operating at a maximum speed of 32-times the normal rate -- dub a one-hour programme to DVD in just under two minutes.

The HDD also comes with a wide range of editing functionality including 'Play List Editing'. When you save digital video camcorder footage in HDD via i.LINK, you can easily edit scenes before burning to DVD.

The 'Help' function adds further convenience, providing easy-to-follow instructions for operations and functions, with a high-resolution and intuitive graphical user interface (GUI).

JVC's 'Temporary Loop Recording' function automatically initiates temporary HDD recording of programmes broadcast on the selected channel and of course, the two units allow simultaneous recording and playback of TV programmes. The scenes being recorded in real-time can be displayed in a sub window during playback, so you'll know exactly when to stop recording.

A Wide Selection for Maximised Benefit

In addition to the features already detailed, the JVC DVD recorders provides many benefits backed by JVC-signature features such as superior picture quality, multi-format compatibility, and user-friendliness. They deliver a range of solutions responding to the diverse home entertainment needs of users worldwide.

Recording and Playback Technologies for Superior Picture Quality

The Super MPEG Encode Pre-Processor ensures superior image quality when recording from analogue by effectively reducing noise before MPEG-2 encoding takes place. It's a 3-step process:

* Time Base Corrector (TBC) eliminates jitter contained in analogue input signals

* Frame Synchroniser corrects frame crossover jitter and processes any deviant frames

* Motion Active Noise Reduction system reduces the noise of moving pictures by precisely detecting the motion and applying the algorithm between the moving pixels. This selective noise reduction ensures that encoded images -- especially moving subjects that are likely to draw the viewer's attention -- are free of edge smear and image lag.

The Super MPEG Post-Processor works to reduce picture playback noise, also in 3-step process:

* Block Noise Reduction circuit reduces annoying 'block noise' caused by MPEG-2 compression.

* Colour DigiPure conducts 3D noise reduction and enhances colour and detail to provide sharp yet natural pictures.

* Hadamard Noise Reduction system eliminates 'mosquito noise'.

The two DVD recorders can produce PAL Progressive (625p) signals from any DVD being played. Motion Active Progressive Scan Output* generates a progressive scan signal from interlaced sources, such as TV programmes recorded on DVD. Digital Direct Progressive Scan Output delivers the original progressive data – such as a movie on pre-recorded DVD -- without converting to interlaced data, so there is no quality loss and the picture remains true to the original film source.

Long-time Recording with High Resolution Pictures (DVD-RAM/DVD-RW VR Format)

With the JVC DVD recorders, recording time can be flexibly adjusted depending on the length of content or the desired picture quality. Four recording modes are available, which respectively allow about 1, 2, 4 and 6 hours of recording on a single disc and both are able to maintain high resolution pictures even over extended recording periods.

With conventional DVD recorders, image quality can become degraded with long recordings, due to the trade-off between reducing noise and maintaining resolution. With the JVC recorders, however, the recorder attenuates MPEG noise while maintaining a high horizontal resolution. In the 3-hour recording mode (FR180), for example, the unit maintains 400-line high resolution, as compared with about 250 lines for recorders using conventional technologies.

The XP mode offers optimum picture quality at approximately 500 lines of resolution. To assure recordings that fit precisely on the disc while offering the best possible quality, you can also manually adjust the sampling rate from among 63 steps (up to 8-hours of recording in FR480 mode), or set the deck to record a programme on a blank or partially recorded disc with automatic sampling rate optimisation.

Library Database DVD Navigation and Animated Thumbnail (DVD-RAM/DVD-RW VR Format)

JVC DVD recorders can memorise information from up to 2,000 programmes, including such information as titles, disc numbers, and recording dates, and when you choose one, the player tells you which disc to load. Once loaded, thumbnail pictures of recorded programmes are displayed. And when you select a thumbnail, it becomes animated --complete with sound – for easy programme content recognition.

Live Memory (Hard Disk Drive)

HDD’s outstanding capabilities allow Simultaneous Recording & Playback. Play scenes you missed without stopping current recording or having to wait until the end. Since the scene being recorded in real-time can be displayed in a window using the Live Check function, you’ll know exactly when to stop recording.

i.LINK Connection

The JVC DVD recorders all come with an i.LINK terminal, which enables digital connectivity with other equipment including MiniDV video cameras. The input DV signal is directly converted to MPEG-2 format — a digital-to-digital conversion that ensures high-quality images with less noise, less loss, and highly accurate details. This connection also lets you control the DV unit through the i.LINK cable, using the DVD recorder's remote so you won’t have to bother with using two sets of controls.

Exclusive Benefits of HDD

HDD Means Large Capacity for Mass Storage

HDD boasts enormous storage capacity -- 160GB -- and provides up to 272 hours of recording, while the DR-MH20 HDD offers 80GB and up to 136 hours of recording. Either of these units can easily store a large number of TV programmes and other video content, and are ideal for transferring content from DVD discs for archiving and/or playback on various compatible players. The sheer convenience of these systems becomes immediately apparent to users who have to be away for extended periods but don't want to miss any of their favourite TV programmes.

Temporary Loop Recording

JVC's Hard Disk Drive automatically activates 'Temporary Loop Recording' when the unit is turned on. This function permits you to “rewind” real-time broadcasts for playback or recording from the beginning without ever loading a disc or setting the timer. The HDD records TV programmes up to a specified number of minutes/hours in a continuous loop.

Live Memory

As a broadcast plays, Live Memory saves the programme on Hard Disk temporarily so a ringing door bell or other interruption won't disrupt TV viewing enjoyment. Some of the key benefits include:

• Pause Live TV to pause, and then resume watching a real-time broadcast, with nothing missed.

• One-Touch (Instant) Replay to replay a scene (in seven-second increments).

• Quick Skip to jump ahead 30 seconds per push.

• Time Skip to jump ahead or back to the next or previous 15 minutes, half-hour, or top of the hour in clock time.

• Live Slow and Search to watch live TV at ±1/2, ±1/4, or ±1/16 speed.

RetroActive Recording

Even midway through a real-time programme, you can “rewind” and record from the beginning, or from any interval in between*.

*Applies only to the programme (channel) currently being viewed.

HDD + DVD -- Exclusive Benefits of the two-in-one Combination

Intelligent Dual-Pass Encode Dubbing*

Video content directly recorded in real time onto DVD must fit the disc's 4.7GB capacity. A scene with rapid movement or a complicated scene with many moving objects requires a drastically higher bit rate than simple scenes with little movement. With direct recording, the recorder cannot change the bit rate flexibly enough to allocate the appropriate number of bits to each scene. The unfortunate result is often MPEG compression noise appearing in complex scenes.

JVC's Intelligent Dual-Pass Encode Dubbing solves this problem by analysing the entire video content as it is recorded to the HDD. Based on the analysis of picture difficulty from this 'first pass', it then makes a 'second pass' and records the signals to DVD while considering the total bit requirement of the entire content. In this way, the intelligent processing can save its bit allocation for difficult scenes without wasting it on simple scenes. As a result, it records the highest possible quality pictures on to the DVD, minimising any chance of MPEG noise.

*'Intelligent Dual-Pass Encode Dubbing' function is available in XP or SP mode, or FR60-120 at first HDD recording.

High-Speed Dubbing (HDD-->DVD)

Dubbing video contents from Hard Disk Drive to DVD can be completed at an incredibly high speed--up to 32 times the normal rate*. A one-hour programme can be copied to a DVD disc in less than 2 minutes.

*Possible when an FR480-mode-recorded programme is copied to a DVD-R disc compatible with 4x recording.

Relief Recording

Suppose you've set the recording timer but forgotten to load a disc, or you've loaded a disc but its remaining blank space is insufficient for the programme you intend to record. JVC recorders automatically detect the absence of a disc or a lack of space, and record the programme on HDD instead -- from beginning to end.
