New DVD-R500 Will Incorporate Ability to Record Live TV to Hard Drive, Feature Audio/Video Jukebox and Support VCR + Technology

Taiwanese consumer electronics giant Mustek, one of the top five manufacturers of DVD recorders (source: Techno Systems Research Co. Ltd, December 2003.) today announced that it will demonstrate at CES this week a next-generation DVD recorder powered by Cirrus Logic Inc. audio and video chipsets and software.

When in full production, which is expected in the June calendar quarter of 2004, Mustek expects the DVD-R500 to integrate an 80 gigabyte internal hard drive, allowing for a wealth of new Cirrus-software enabled consumer features. These features include the ability to record digital video to the hard disk - with the ability to pause, fast-forward and replay live television - or to DVD disc media. Users will also have the ability to transfer content from the hard drive to a DVD for permanent archiving. Also, through a licensing agreement with Gemstar, Mustek plans to integrate VCR+ technology, which is supported on Cirrus' DVD recording platforms, into the DVD-R500.

The DVD-R500 also features Cirrus' software that creates an Audio/Video Jukebox feature, giving consumers the ability to store their entire library of CDs in the MP3 digital audio format, greatly simplifying sorting, management and playback of digital music as part of a home theater digital entertainment product.

"With Cirrus Logic's teamwork, Mustek has quickly grown during 2003 into one of the leading manufacturers of DVD recorders," said Jack Chang, director of Engineering for Mustek. "In 2004, we plan to continue to aggressively drive increased growth, capitalizing on the wealth of new features that Cirrus provides through its superb chips and software."

The DVD-R500 is based upon on of Cirrus' newest DVD recorder platform of audio and video chips, including Cirrus' latest MPEG encoding chip, the CS92688. The CS92688 features built-in digital video (DV) and 1394 media access controller (MAC) support for low-cost camcorder input. The chip also offers integrated VBI processing for closed-caption and electronic programming guide support, hardware support for copy protection for recorded media to protect the rights of content holders, and a glueless interface to the CS98200 series of Cirrus DVD processors for lowest cost integration. "Through the strength of our DVD recording platforms Cirrus has enabled Mustek to quickly become one of the top five global manufacturers of DVD recorders," said Brian Heuckroth, vice president of DVD Recording, Cirrus Logic. "Through both new hardware and software innovations to these DVD recorder platforms, Cirrus looks forward to helping Mustek continue to introduce new advanced consumer features at competitive prices."
