The fate of the PSX remains unclear, but slightly more positive, with conflicting news emerging from Japan about the future of the DVD Recorder / PS2 hybrid.

Last month we reported that Sony was ending PSX production, but now those crafty Japanese electronics gurus have foxed us, by announcing two new models, the DESR-7700 and DESR-5700, for release on 15 April.

The difference between the old and new models is small though and basically involves a firmware upgrade that allows recorded material to be saved to Memory Stick in a format readable by the new Sony Playstation Portable.

Owners of the old DESR-7500 and DESR-5500 models will be able to get the firmware upgrade separately, but those with even older models will miss out.
