Toshiba are growing with confidence over their HD-DVD format as they announce that they are ready to begin mass-producing recordable discs.

Disc manufacturers, currently producing recordable DVD disks, will only have to make minor modifications to be able to produce the new higher-definition kind, Toshiba said. The discs will be ready for the launch of Toshiba's range of HD-DVD recorders in spring 2005.

At the same time, Toshiba declared that they were no longer interested in talking with Sony about a unified format for next-generation optical storage.

"We won't talk from our side," Toshiba Corporate Senior Vice President Yoshihide Fujii said.

"The 0.1-millimeter format seems impossible now," Fujii said, referring to the Blu-Ray optical cover layer thickness.
