Philips is taking consumer DVD recording and hard disk technology to a logical next stage – with the introduction this spring of the HDRW720 DVD Recorder / Hard Disk.

The HDRW720 combines Philips’ proven DVD recorder capabilities – based on the most compatible DVD+R/+RW format – with the digital convenience of hard disk personal video recorder functionality (including ‘pause live TV’ and ‘instant replay’) and, for the first time in this product category, the Guide Plus+® electronic program guide (EPG).

The result is a device offering consumers the most convenient functionalities for video recording:

80Gb hard disk - storage of up to 130 hours or 60 movies
Pause Live TV and Instant Replay - pause a live broadcast and enjoy instant replays without stopping the recording
Flextime – catch up with the start of a TV program while still recording the rest of it
One-touch recording – record any TV program on impulse at the press of a button
Guide Plus+ EPG – convenient, easy-to-use interface for choosing and recording TV programs up to seven days ahead of broadcast.
Digital recording flexibility
The HDRW720 enables consumers to adjust their TV viewing to their everyday lives, flexibly providing the option to record up to 130 hours of television directly onto the 80Gb hard disk to watch at their leisure, or save the program onto a DVD for a lifetime of memories.

The HDRW720 is the first hard disk recorder to be introduced offering an easy-to-use onscreen EPG, providing viewers with a point-and-click system for specifying TV programs to record up to seven days ahead.

As one of the pioneers of personal video recording, Philips has applied its established expertise in this category in the HDRW720. Features like Pause Live TV, Instant Replay or Flextime add a unique level of convenience, enabling viewers to really take control of their TV-watching experience.

‘Pause live TV’ has proven to be one of the most popular features of personal video recorders: if viewing is interrupted by a phone call or visitor at the front door, the viewer can ‘pause’ the live broadcast and return to it later, picking up the program where it was left and continue to watch it in virtual real time. For sports fans, this feature also gives the viewer an instant replay of a vital moment, without needing to stop the recording.

All the benefits of DVD Recording
The Philips HDRW720 DVD Recorder / Hard Disk offers all the benefits of Philips’ leadership in DVD recording and the DVD+R/+RW format. The durability and compatibility DVD+RW and DVD+R discs ensure that memories can be saved for a lifetime.

The HDRW720 features a simple solution for transferring recordings from the hard disk to DVD media - High Speed Archiving. With a single instruction, content can be digitally transferred at up to 20 times the speed of recording time. For crisp clear copies of camcorder memories, the HDRW720 features a front i.LINK® digital connection (also known as FireWire® or IEEE 1394) providing easy connection for perfect copies and two-way camera control.

The HDRW720 will be launched in Europe in the second quarter of 2004. Journalists should contact their local Philips media relations contact for details of pricing and market availability. Consumers are asked to visit http://www.philips.com and select from the Philips Consumer Care options for online, e-mail and local telephone contact.
