Pioneer was first off the blocks when DVD recorders were unleashed at the turn of the century. Now, six years later the manufacturer is reportedly throwing in the towel and ending development of new machines.
DVD and HDD recorders will continue to be sold under the Pioneer brand, but the components will be licensed from Panasonic.
Japanese journal Nihon Keizai Shimbun is reporting that Pioneer is attributing its massive 12 month losses to the unprofitable DVD recorder market where budget models are already savaging the sales of established brands.
It seems likely that the tie up with Panasonic will see Pioneer focus on Blu-Ray.
