July 13th 2006 Toshiba Delays RD-A1 HD-DVD Recorder
Japanese consumers were scheduled to get their hands on the machine this morning, but that release will now be pushed back by a couple of weeks to July 27. A shortage of parts is being blamed, meaning that production volumes haven't been high enough to support the nationwide launch that Toshiba is after. The RD-A1 shows every sign of being a fantastic, but expensive product. Designed for use with high definition broadcasts, the 1 terabyte hard drive can 130 hours of broadcasts. If you want to record at normal resolutions then you would have a hard job filling that up. However, all of this doesn't come cheap with a suggested price tag of 398,000 yen (US$3,470). Toshiba hopes to shift 10,000 units in 2006, but has so far refused to comment on when the RD-A1, or similar, will be available overseas. |
