Buy from a company that has a good return policy.
I bought 2 from www.bestbuy.com and one from www.radioshack.com
All froze solid after many attempts to unplug un froze the machines..

I object to buying a machine and then have to mess about updating firmware to get it to recognise this and that. It works with DVD RW and little success with DVD+R as yet. Quality seems ok and is very easy to set up. Perhaps the manufacturers should list some brands of discs that are compatible with this machine. Firmware update is available on the website but that didnt work and I have a bin of wasted discs. Still it does the job in principle.

Very unsuccessful and wouldn't recommend at all (even to someone I didn't like).
ASDA were selling these for £69 so I thought I'd give them a try as my first DVD recorder.
The first one - the remote didn't work at all so it was returned, and I struggled with the second for three weeks.
As a player it's OK but expensive.
As a recorder - it doesn't work.
I tried four different types of disc (in case it was the media used : Tesco/Maxell/Verbatim/MrDVD). On all of them it would refuse to recognize the disc (over 50%) and those that it would format, upon recording (could see visually the burn't tracks) it would then either not display the menu or not recognize the disc, so be unplayable (tried on other DVD players but still nothing doing).
Took it back and got my money back.
