When it comes to performance, the HR300H is rather impressive.

If you're interested in doing a fair amount of editing instead of just making direct copies, consider purchasing a DVD recorder that has a built-in hard drive, such as Sharp's $800 DV-HR300U.

Its editing features also make it extremely versatile, and it looks great both on the shelf and on the screen.

Excellent recording unit. The picture quality is excellent in fine mode and very good in SP. Haven't tried EP and LP yet.

The unit is not very great in editing though. You are force to start up from the beginning when you delete a scene. And even though you can forward it at approx 11x, it still annoys when you edit a 4 hours recording.

The burning/dubbing process also not quite good. You are stuck with 2x eventhough the media has started to support 4x since beginning of last year. Forget the gimmick that said it can record 1hrs SP in 15min. It does not make it a 4x machine. What you have to remember in mind is that it will take 30min to fill a 4.7GB blank DVD at high speed dub mode (a 2x recorder)! Also high speed dubbing requires you to turn on the feature which in turn limit editing function.

The DVD that it makes can be played on all of my other machine (2 philips and china brand) with good quality.

The DVD playback feature also just average with standard (not progressive-scan) component output. My philips player give better pict especially around the edges of an object.

I am quite satisfied as this is my first HD recorder and I am buying it 30% cheaper than its nearer competitor. For the future I definetely will look for DVD+ with dual layer and higher speed single layer recorder!
